Disliked - Two roads in around the lake our sat nav took us towards a steep narrow road and security refused us access and we had turn round in a very limited space, a road sign well before to prevent many motorhomes taking the same route would help

Camping Bled is situated at the far end of the Lake from the town and depending on which way you approach, the route is either very narrow and winding or not narrow but winding. It’s in a beautiful part of Slovenia and easily reachable from Austria. We were travelling South to Croatia so it made sense to have a 3-night stopover there.

The site is in a gorgeous setting, heavily wooded, but the pitches are arranged so that each one has it’s own space under the trees. Facilities are clean and warm but a bit scattered about: water was by one tap, serving a number of pitches; grey water waste was situated near the entrance and was in fact the motorhome disposal point, making it a bit of a nuisance if one had to wait for these vehicles to clear the area. The shower block near us was clean and had pot washing outside at the back and was well-lit. There are cabins to rent here as well.

The site boasts a large bar area, serving drinks and pizzas etc., with a great view of the lake. There was also a fairly well-stocked supermarket-type of shop which had the basics that one would need for a stay there. For those who want fresh bread and pastries, a mobile baker comes each day with a range of delicious baked goods. There was a field where a wide range of activities (for both adults and children) took place. Included were a mock-medieval activity course and archery. There’s an inflatable water fun place as well. Around the area there are lots of places to visit and lots of things to do – too many for us to see as we were only there for 3 nights.

There is a track/path which goes all the way around the stunning Lake and takes in the castle, the town and offers a good deal of lake views. The castle is worth a visit as the view from the top is pretty spectacular. Tip: lots of steps! Once you get to the castle, there is a café which sells the famous Bled pastry/cake and a range of drinks. There is also a range of rooms open as part of the attraction, which tells the history of the building and of the town. As we were enjoying our coffee and cake, we saw some paragliders soaring across the lake and over our heads. This looked fun but sadly we were unable to try it.

The town is worth a visit...plenty of restaurants and shops, as well as a choice of hotels. We were impressed with Bled – although very touristy, it did not force itself on you and we found it relaxing to wander around.

We took a scheduled boat to the island to see the church. The boats (powered by a one-person rower!) run fairly regularly and are operated by long-established families and it’s a nice way to travel across t
And around the Lake. The church on the island is impressive, but there’s not much else on the island. Instead of returning on the same boat to the town, we decided to take another boat to the shore, closer to the caravan site (you can do this if you ask the boat operator if they have room) and duly restarted our walk back.

As we were admiring the view along the path, we came across a gentleman who was selling original watercolour sketches of the Lake and other local scenes. We stopped and I bought one. At this, the artist (who sold his own work) watercolured a sketch of the two us which he did free of charge. We both thought this was charming and quite made our visit (the price of the picture was very reasonable too).

When we left, we paid the balance outstanding and joined the other vehicles also leaving – which made the entrance/exit area a bit crowded and caused a few comments from other campers who were trying to leave at the same time. There didn’t seem to be a way of paying your balance before you drove out to avoid blocking the exit. Anyway, it was a great visit and we recommend this site.

We booked a larger pitch and it was very nice - but a tadge expensive. We got 5% off with our ASCI card.
Helpful staff with good English. Maps and tourist information available at reception

Disliked - One washing machine out of order and tumble dryer left clothes wet after an hour in the dryer. Waste of 5 euros
Not advised of taxes that would be added to the bill even when on arrival I asked what the cost would be. Taxes added 29 euros to the price of 108 euros
