Low-emission zones in Germany

Many large cities in Germany have ‘Umweltzones’ or ‘environmental zones’ for which an emissions sticker is mandatory. In Germany, the sticker is called an ‘Umweltplakette’.  When the low-emission zones were introduced in Germany, there were three types of emissions stickers issued: green, yellow and red.

The colour that is allocated to your car or motorhome depends on its emission levels (emission class). Nowadays, only the green emissions sticker is still sold in Germany. In the course of 2024, the last low-emission zone in Germany that permits the yellow sticker will disappear as well.

If you enter a low-emission zone in Germany, you will see a traffic sign with the text ‘Umweltzone’ (Environmental Zone). The colour of the sticker permitted is shown below.

  • I grew up camping. The tent was pitched every year in beautiful places in the Netherlands and Belgium. I like active or relaxing holidays in the countryside best. Preferably at a campsite by a lake or river with a view of the mountains. For me, a day in the city is always part of a holiday.

  1. You say the German sticker (known to its mates as a Feinstaubplakette) costs ‘between € 11.50 and € 20.00’. It costs €5.95. I recently ordered mine online from the Berlin Landesamt, and it arrived in 10 days. All you need to provide is your name and address and a photo or scan of the technical details section of your vehicle’s V5.

    • Thanks for the info!

  2. cars rented with Netherlands license plate come already with Low emission sticker to drive in Belgium?

    • For Belgium, you don’t need an emissions sticker. You would have to inform at the rental company if your car is in the right emissions category for the Belgia emission zones (whih are currently only in the towns of Antwerpen and Gent). However, a car from a rental company wil probably be pretty recent. The emission restrictions generally apply for older cars.

  3. “You do not need an emissions sticker on motorways or provincial roads”

Apparently that’s not correct in Ulm

“There are no exceptions such as roads which you can use to pass through the low-emission zone in Ulm. This means that you also need an emissions sticker on the B10, the B19 and the B28. ”

    Hope this helps someone
