4 x 4-star campsites in Slovenia
5 June, 2019
Slovenia was the place to go camping in 2018 and this year it’s still very popular with campers. And that’s not just because of the wonderfully varied countryside or the rich cultural history. The campsites in Slovenia too are absolutely able to compete with those in more traditional holiday destinations. Below I’d like to introduce you to my favourite 4-star campsites in wonderful Slovenia!
1. Terme Ptuj Campsite ****
There are many reasons to go camping in Slovenia, but if you’re going for culture, history, and an impressive water park, then Terme Ptuj Campsite is perfect for you. That’s because it’s on the outskirts of Ptuj, the oldest city in the country. Ptuj has a lovely city centre, a labyrinth of narrow lanes and lots of beautiful old buildings, such as the Dominican monastery and Ptuj castle, which you can even see from the campsite.
But it’s not all just about culture and history here. Terme Ptuj campsite is a modern family campsite with excellent facilities and a range of activities for young and old. If you stay here, you can also use the swim and spa facilities at the hotel and spa complex next door. And that’s not just a pool, it’s a complete water park with several indoor and outdoor pools, toddler pools, spectacular slides, thermal baths, saunas, whirlpools and a wave pool. Guaranteed water fun!
Need a break from all the water? Then enjoy a relaxing massage, culinary delights in the restaurant, or a glass of wine on the terrace. The area around Ptuj is not known as the wine region of Slovenia for nothing. And there’s plenty aside from the swimming complex for kids too. The entertainment team, the sports fields and the playgrounds ensure there’s much more fun to be had.

2. Campsite Adria ****
Slovenia doesn’t have a coastline? It does! On the Slovenian Riviera, a short coastal strip between the Italian city of Trieste and the Croatian peninsula of Istria, there are a few beautiful seaside towns with amazing beaches. Ankaran is one such coastal town and Campsite Adria is located right on the azure blue Adriatic Sea. The sandy beach runs right past the campsite, and because the water at the coast is relatively shallow, it’s also perfect for younger children who want to enjoy the seaside.
And the kids are guaranteed to enjoy the fenced Jumpyland play park. There is a small entrance fee, but then you can enjoy unlimited entrance to the bouncy castles, play equipment and trampolines between 18:00 and 22:00. Adria Campsite is more than just a sun, sea and sand holiday spot though. It’s also perfect for a visit to the lakes and mountains in the Slovenian interior, or for a daytrip to the picturesque coastal towns of Koper and Piran.

3. Ljubljana Resort ****
The capital city, Ljubljana, is located right in the middle of Slovenia. Not a huge metropolis, but a very hip, trendy city that is very popular these days as a destination for a city trip. If you walk through the city, you’ll soon discover why. There’s the architecture with its Austrian and Italian influences, such as the colourful Vurnik House. Or the high-quality culinary products that you can try at one of the local cafes or at the Central Market.
A great place to stay on your voyage of discovery is the Ljubljana Resort, one of the largest tourist resorts in central Slovenia. Due to its location near Ljubljana, this resort is often used as a stopover campsite, but you can certainly spend longer in this spacious, green oasis. The facilities at this environmentally friendly campsite are excellent, with plenty of things for the kids to do, and a fantastic swimming complex (entrance fee) at the centre of the resort.
Thanks to its central location in Slovenia, it’s also a perfect spot for all sorts of fun day trips. You can get virtually anywhere in the country within 2 hours’ drive. How about the magical caves of Postojna or Škocjan? If you go further north you can even explore the Julian Alps or relax by the famous Lake Bled.

4. Campsite Menina ****
Are the Alps the main reason for your holiday in Slovenia, and are you fond of peace and quiet, space, and (being active in) the countryside? Then Campsite Menina is perfect for you! The campsite is right in the Savinja Valley and is surrounded by woods and mountain tops. A perfect spot for walking, cycling or mountain biking in the mountains, but also to have fun in – or on – the water. There’s a great swimming lake at the campsite, which is also perfect for kids, and the Savinja River runs behind the campsite – it’s perfect for all sorts of water sports. Another place to visit in the area is the Logar Valley. Here you’ll find more than thirty natural attractions, including ice grottos and waterfalls.
Menina Campsite focuses mostly on families with school-aged children, so there’s all sorts of activities for the young people. For instance, there’s an adrenaline (climbing) park where you can go on an exciting trail high above the ground and there are even specially-organised hiking tours, including an overnight stay, for teens.
